During the October half-term in 2015, Loula and I embarked on a week-long 'sludgeathon' after discovering a fledgling genre of American techno known as 'Sludge'.
After reading around the subject, we set about making our own take on the style despite having not actually heard any of it.
Our rules were: 110bpm, all analogue hardware, plenty of distortion, no breakbeat samples (we did end up sampling our kids, who were sitting around our living room chatting into a cheap vocoder.)
We wrote and recorded a tune a day for a week.
About half way in we decided to actually listen to some Sludge made by the pioneer himself, Marshall Applewhite. We decided we were kind of on the right track and pressed on, ending up with this set of tunes.
Heavy kick drums and distorted stompboxes aplenty, the whole session ended up as a form of gabberesque easy listening.
We eventually sent them all to Mr Applewhite who selected 4 tracks to put out on his Yo Sucka imprint in Detroit in 2016.
I've since taken the original sessions and cleaned them up to release in their entirety here.
